Whenever we give directions to Decatur Self Storage, it is always the cat mural that makes our building convenient to find. Angela Bond still paints animals in vibrant colors. The cats are real by the way, painted from photographs of our family cat, Maddie (although she is not really that colorful). Enjoy the view!

History of Decatur Self Storage
Decatur Self Storage is an adaptive re-use of a vintage industrial building. The building is one of the first to be constructed on East Ponce de Leon Ave in 1947. It was owned originally by the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce. The building was occupied by Lennox Industries until we purchased it in 1997. We then converted the distribution warehouse to self-storage in 1999. So many people ask us why we had cats painted on the front of the building. One of our early tenants, an artist named Angela Bond, painted the mural to attract attention from the street. The colorful mural has now become a landmark, along with the nearby Your DeKalb Farmers Market.

Why Solar Power?
Decatur Self Storage is proud to be one of the first and only fully solar-powered storage facilities in Georgia. Our facility is powered by a solar energy system that utilizes 396 255W modules and 12 MA Sunnyboy 7000 inverters from Georgia-based Suniva. This system is estimated to produce 134,000 kWh of power annually and provides more than 100 percent of our facility’s electricity needs.
The benefits of using solar power for our storage facility are numerous. Not only does it reduce our carbon footprint by avoiding in excess of 155,000 pounds of CO2, but it also minimizes maintenance costs. Solar power systems have no moving parts and can last upwards of 25 years, which means that we can leverage our customers’ investment over a long time frame to save them money.
In addition to the environmental and cost-saving benefits, our solar power system is interconnected with Georgia Power, which allows us to sell excess electric production. This means that our customers can participate in green technology while paying no more rent than other facilities.
Decatur Self Storage is proud to be a leader in the use of sustainable energy and is excited to continue to provide our customers with the highest level of service while also being environmentally responsible.
